3 New Ways in Portrait Photography
Today we’re going to take a look at three new ways of taking portraits in the studio.
Many photographers know that you can use an off-camera flash and a softbox, but did you know that there are other techniques to get great portraits with only on-camera light? Let’s take a closer look!
1. Split Lighting
The first technique is called ‘split lighting’. This is a great way to accentuate the features of your subject’s face. To create this effect, you’ll want to place your light source above and to one side of your subject. This will create a shadow on the opposite side of their face, which will help to define their features.
2. Rembrandt Lighting
The second technique is called ‘Rembrandt lighting’. This is a classic portrait lighting style that can be used to create a sense of depth and dimension. To create this effect, you’ll want to place your light source above and behind your subject, with the light hitting them from the side. This will create a triangular highlight on their cheek, and you can use a reflector to fill in the shadow side of their face.
2. Rembrandt Lighting
The final technique is called ‘Loop lighting’. This style uses three lights: two on-camera flashes, and one off-camera flash placed behind your subject. The key difference with this setup compared to others we’ve discussed today is that instead of using a softbox, you’ll use a reflector to bounce light off of the ceiling and onto your subject’s face. This will create a softer light that is more flattering for portraits.
